Lounge social groups are subsections of Simmons Hall that receive a portion of house funds to run trips, throw housewide events, and buy stuff to make our lounges "better places to live and learn." What do you want your lounge to do with its funding? Sign up and let your voice be heard!

How do I start my own lounge?

  1. Read through the lounge bylaws to make sure you understand the process.
  2. Send the following info to the lounge coordinator by Friday September 7, 2007, so that people can sign up for your lounge :
    • Name for your lounge social group
    • The name and email address of the lounge representative or co-representatives(aka president aka lounge head aka... the person who decided to take responsibility for signing receipts for reimbursements and notifying members about lounge events)
    • Lounge URL (if one exists)
    • Lounge Blurb (to be posted on this page)
  3. Request funding from the house committee: Funding proposals are due the Wednesday prior to each house committee meeting. You should check the lounge bylaws to determine how much money your lounge is eligible to request per member signed up via the online form. Lounge funding requests should be emailed to the lounge coordinator.

How do I join lounge?

Each Simmons resident may join only one lounge. Descriptions of Fall '07 lounge groups are listed below. Lounge Rush will take place on Sunday September 9, 2007. This is your opportunity to meet the people involved in this term's lounges. Starting Sunday September 9, 2007 online signups will be activated, and you can enter your lounge preference online. Here's how:

  1. Go the Simmons Database home page and click on the link in the floating yellow box OR
  2. Visit your Lounge Membership page (click here)
  3. Select your lounge! (Note: you cannot switch during the course of the semester)

What happened to my old lounge?

Unless someone decided to create it again, it died. Do you miss it? Reform the group! (See instructions above.)

What are the Deadlines?

Friday September 7, 11:59PM

Deadline to form a new lounge or re-form an old one.

Sunday September 9, evening

Friday September 14, 10pm

Membership deadline. If you signup after this time, your lounge will not get $30 for you. If your lounge does not have 10 members, it will receive no funding at all until there are 10 members.

Fall 2007 Lounge Descriptions


3 Piece Cheesecake (bjason)

Arranging itself around a set of common interests (soccer and cheesecake), this lounge's intention is to show its members what it means to be students at MIT. With everything going on in our lives at this school, we often forget that these are supposed to be the best years of our lives. In an effort to fully exploit this concept, members of this lounge will partake in events ranging from rock climbing and MLS soccer games, to bowling and movie going. For those interested in meeting others and learning to "let loose" in a constructive manner, the 3C lounge is for you!

ARA (geehoon)

This lounge is the gathering place of people nostalgic for Korea, the last chance of the Korean language being spoken and heard in this English-monopolic land. We play, we study, we have fun. In Korean. We also cook when we get the chance, usually stuff that tends to burn your tongue away. We believe in "No Pain, No Gain;" only those who can endure the hotness of Korean food will be able to to taste that of Korean culture.

Come to the ball pit Charlie...Come...it's full of magic wonders and gluten free food...Charlie...Come to the ball pit Charlie...free food and movies...let's go to Boston...I mean Sugar Candy--uh...the ball pit. No, really, we won't take your kidneys...well, at least not without consent...

Join us for a grand time this term as we enjoy:

Dinners out = Ethiopian, North End, Chinatown, Afghani, TexMex,...
Shows = Musicals & concerts,...
TRIPS!! = Hikes , Walden pond, Kayaking or canoeing down the Charles,...

Sciencey stuff like trips to Wellesley or Harvard observatory, etc would be of interest.

And of course, some lounge funding would go towards ---
PROJECTS! = Finish musical staircase? , whatever people think of - auto drape closers, etc,...

Our lounge will have a little bits of everything and if there's somewhere or something you really want to do - we'd love to try it! And to accomodate people's dates and ideas we have set up a WIKI. So join us for a great term of trips, projects, shows, and of course FOOD (which implies fun). Hope to see you soon!

We are the lounge of the 5th floor a tower. We'd like to improve the space and social quality of this area, so we'd use funds to procure rugs, couches, beanbag chairs, and more tables so that people can hang out and do work in a more comfortable and social environment. If you live anywhere near 5A, consider joining.

The Lounge Formerly Known as the Diabolical Dinosaurz! (amaguire)

Hi! our name is “Diabolical Dinosaurz!”…What? our name is “Diabolical Dinosaurz!”…Who? our name is “Diabolical Dinosaurz!”

This is dedicated to every kid who ever got picked last in gym class, to every kid who never had a date to no school dance, to everyone who’s ever been called a freak, this is for you (it is likely that many of these people attend MIT, and while the lounge is not currently made up of these people, dedicating this blurb to them seemed appropriate and was a potentially humorous use of song lyrics from 2000)…

We’re Sweet and sour like a tangerine, fresh like a box of krispy kreme… we’re intercontinental cause we eat French toast…Nobody got nothing on us…f-r-e-s-h we fresh d-e-f that’s right we def. We are heaven sent don’t you dare forget we are all you’ve ever wanted what all the other lounges promised; sorry we told we just needed you to know.

We’ll dance off-time to the songs we’ve never liked and sing off-key thinking it sounds all right (we’ll also go out to dinner and do other activities like watching movies or whatever else people want to do because not everyone likes the same stuff…I don’t know how to sell this “vision” to you and don’t think it would work if I tried, but more people = better, and some of you reading this might realize that this lounge is the best available and you’ll decide to join and it will be awesome or at least better than awful).

Are you looking for something more in your life? Do you feel an empty void within, that is just calling out for something better? Well, maybe what you're looking for are the Schrodinger Cats.

We subsist on funfetti birthday cakes and Thursday night tea time. We listen to bedtime stories to help us go to sleep. We build ball pits and surf the stairs. We love hanging out in the hallways and offering every one we see free food. And what's even better is we have delicious parties with endless supplies of hint of lime chips and diet coke.

The perfect superposition of study and lounge, work and play, pain and pleasure - the Schrodinger Cats have it all!

The Super Power/Anti-Terrorism Lounge (aka SPAT) (jhansel)

SPAT is a lounge for people with similar TV tastes (or obsessions), dedicated mostly the shows Heroes and 24. Many of us watch these shows every week already, so why not watch them with other like-minded people, hang out, and of course have free food. We are also always open to suggestions for other ways to spend lounge money. If you love 24 or Heroes, join SPAT!
