Simmons Hall Interim Quiet Hours and Noise Poilcy 1

Every Simmons Hall student "has the right to object to noise (especially caused by loud music) which prohibits him/her from studying or sleeping, or which is audible well beyond the student's own room." 2

Quiet Hours:

Weekday Nights (Sunday to Thursday)

  • 11:00 P.M. - 12 A.M. - Start to wind down, quieter talking, move to an unpopulated area if you anticipate making noise.
  • 12:00 AM. - 12:00 P.M. - No noise that is distinctly audible outside your room.

    Weekend Nights (Friday & Saturday)

    • 1:00 A.M. - No noise that is distinctly audible outside your room. Move to another area if you anticipate making noise.

    Noise Complaints:

Noise complaints should be made, in person, to the resident(s) who are creating the noise disturbance.

Noise complaints should be direct, courteous and respectful.

Noise complaints should be received and responded to in a manner that is courteous and respectful.

If the noise continues, students may then contact, in the following order of preference, the JudCom, the Night Guard (3-1500), a Tutor, or a Housemaster. If none of the above is available or able to help and the situation demands instantaneous action, call Campus Police (3-1212).

Students who are particularly sensitive to noise are encouraged to alert others of any early morning practices, jobs, tests or events that are of particular importance.

1 See "Residence Life at MIT" (1997 handbook) for further details.

2 Local noise policies may be developed for interim use. Once a Simmons Hall global quiet hour policy is approved, however, it will supercede any interim policies and may include a JudCom component. All noise policies, whether local or house wide, must respect the right of residents to complain if noise disturbs his/her sleep or study. Also, keep in mind that noise created in one area of Simmons Hall may disturb students in adjacent floors or towers.
