PREFACE

The following is the story of the Founders Group for Simmons Hall. It is the first time I have given it, so bear with me. It is long-- I plan to talk for at least 45 minutes, which is much longer than I'm used to talking. It's also very much my own story. It reflects my own point of view as someone who spent four years working to shape a new residential community, while at the same time I was studying the finer points of urban planning and generally developing experience, intellect, and character as an undergraduate-- at the end of the process I was most certainly a different person than I was at the beginning. If you talk to others who were involved in the process, and I encourage you to do so, they will surely give you a different perspective.

PREFACE TO THE WEB VERSION

This write-up is based on my working notes for the presentation, and does not represent an exact transcript of what I said.  I did some minor editing to clarify parts that needed clarification.  Those of you who saw the presentation will note that I have left out most of the humorous yet irrelevant slides I showed during the presentation-- this was partly in order to keep it short and partly to avoid possible copyright complications, since most of those pictures I just randomly downloaded off the internet.
